Nearly all Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. are now among the unvaccinated.1 So, can those not vaccinated still get Life insurance? Will insurers impose higher premiums?

Although Life insurers require applicants to submit health information, there’s little evidence that coverage will be denied based solely on vaccination status. Insurers assign premiums based on risk factors that predict mortality. So while they do have the ability to charge more, most are not imposing higher premiums on the unvaccinated either. Vaccination status may be considered during the underwriting process, and there could be implications if an applicant has heightened risk factors for Covid-19, but in general, the unvaccinated are not specifically at a disadvantage—at least not yet.2
It’s worth noting that those who have contracted Covid-19 may be asked to delay their Life insurance applications until they’ve fully recovered. The good news is that those who have fully recovered can still qualify for the best rates.
Keep in mind that underwriting standards could change in the future as we learn more about the long-term side effects of Covid-19.
